4 Tips for Mitigating Project Delays

Collaborative projects often experience delays due to extensive back-and-forth communication requirements. The following strategies can help clients work with development teams to reduce delays and improve outcomes.

Map Out Every Detail

Even minor miscommunications can create compounding delays throughout a project. Clients should provide comprehensive project specifications including all pages, special features, anomalies, and third-party integrations.

While development teams bring expertise, clients possess industry knowledge that’s essential for accurate planning. Rather than having teams spend time researching, clients should invest upfront effort in thorough documentation. Though unforeseen issues may still arise, comprehensive preparation enables better problem-solving and deadline adherence.

Have All Stakeholders Involved at Crucial Points

Decision-makers should participate in initial project discussions and design approvals. Excluding stakeholders early creates risk—leadership feedback later in development can require extensive rework, causing delays or quality compromises.

Securing stakeholder buy-in before development begins is particularly critical, as coding work is difficult and expensive to reverse.

Give Feedback Quickly

Projects typically allocate the final 10% to polishing and testing. Communication delays early in projects consume time buffers intended for these final stages, leaving insufficient leeway when issues emerge.

Rapid feedback directly influences timeline control. Prompt responses enable faster progress and greater flexibility for producing quality work.

Use Good Judgement When Pushing for Deadlines

Teams can accelerate earlier project phases, but if timeline pressure reaches final stages, either deadlines must shift or quality suffers. While deadlines serve important planning functions, flexibility prevents quality degradation from rushing unavoidable delays.

Project success depends on communication quality—detailed upfront planning, stakeholder alignment, prompt feedback, and realistic deadline expectations. These are principles we’ve built into our process from day one.
